The Black Widow strikes this Saturday at WCFL 17

The black widow is one of the most lethal species of spiders. It leaves a lasting impression on its victims. That is no different with Jessica “The Black Widow” Borga. In just a short time she has left a lasting impression on her opponents, and the MMA scene in Florida.

Borga, 28, lives and trains in Lakeland, FL at Champions MMA under head coach Ross Kellin. She made her amateur MMA debut about two years ago, after a few years of personal setbacks that kept her from fighting much earlier. She has put together a 4-2 amateur record, with a key Flyweight title fight this Saturday at WCFL 17 in Tampa.

But who is the Black Widow? Why does she fight? The answer is easy: because it makes sense to her.

“It’s my calling.” Borga said. “Giving up is not an option.”

She has shown that each time out in her first six fights. She has shown growth and maturation in a short amount of time. Borga shows no signs of slowing down. She faces a formidable opponent this weekend in Chelsea McCoy.

McCoy will be defending her 125lb title she won at WCFL 16 over Nadeia Thiel. Borga is riding a two fight win streak as she enters this matchup with the similar record that McCoy brings in, 5-2.

Just having a fight to get ready for means a great deal for Borga. She has been victim to many fight cancellations over her young career, something that is unfortunately too evident on the local scene. If you ask her though, it doesn’t matter. She continues to train and stay ready just in case an opportunity presents itself.

“MMA has taught me so much about control, respect, patience and strength.” Borga stated. “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

She had constantly been told by those around her that she should fight. Friends and family would always tell her she was made for it, so she took the plunge. So far it is paying off. She has had some very exciting victories in just a short amount of time. She continuously impresses her coach, Ross Kellin.

“She is a great student who always trains.” Kellin said. “A little difficult at first like a wild animal, but she has become a well-disciplined machine.”

According to Kellin, her strongest feature is her desire and will to win. He said he truly wants it. She admires many of the fighters that have come before her, but she views each of them as potential opponents. It’s a tool she uses to push herself to be better.

“I do love JJ (Joanna Jędrzejczyk) though.” she stated.

For her, the best thing about MMA is getting to see what your mind and body can achieve. On the flip side, is the downfall to committing yourself to MMA. The time away from her family, specifically her son, is her least favorite part of it all. She is confident that it will pay off though. It might have already begun to do so, her biggest fan happens to be her young son.

“I wish I had more time with him, but he loves it.” she said. “He’s my biggest fan.”

Borga has yet again been working hard and training fervently for her next test. That test is fast approaching as she is set to wage war this Saturday in Tampa. She has already fought for many great promotions in and out of Florida. She will get the opportunity to fight for one of the best promotions in Florida when she steps into the World Class Fight League cage this Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
